I think having codes and standards readily accessible is great. U.S. seems to be quite ahead on this compared to other regions. Both IBC and NDS (with all needed supplements) are available online for free to view ( see here Timber_Links – Timber Engineering Forum). Thanks to AWC and ICC. those are called non-profit orgs for a reason. They do sell paper copies and downloadable/printable copies, having an online free-viewing option is great, especially for students.

The CSA O86 is published by CSA Group. The latest version requires a subscription to view and download. The downloaded PDF can only be viewed within the network with the subscription. 

CWC published a Wood Design Manual in Canada, and there is a photocopy of CSA O86 attached to the manual.
